COVID-19 Take-Home Self-Swab Testing Kits are now Available to Arriving Passengers at JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport.

The Sydney Airport Authority (SAA), is pleased to announce that in cooperation with the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA), beginning July 8, COVID-19 take-home self-swab PCR testing kits will be available to passengers arriving at JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport.

This airport testing initiative is being conducted in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Government and NSHA as an added layer of safety for our communities.

“We are happy to support Nova Scotia's testing strategy and to help the fight against COVID-19,” said Mike MacKinnon, CEO, SAA. “By helping to facilitate early detection of the virus in travellers flying to Sydney by air, we will be helping to minimize the spread of the virus in our communities, and we will be supporting the safe re-opening of our province.”

Arriving travellers will be provided with a take-home self-swab PCR testing kit, which can be dropped off within 48 hours of arriving at any COVID-19 provincial assessment centre. A list of the primary assessment centre locations and hours can be found online at:

We’re confident most passengers will opt to take the kit home and this program will make it easier for travellers arriving by air to participate in the Government of Nova Scotia’s COVID-19 testing programs. It should be noted this new testing option does not replace the requirement to self-isolate for 14 days even if passengers receive a negative test result.

Provision of the take home test kits will also help to instill consumer confidence in travel as border restrictions are eased as part of the Nova Scotia Reopening Plan. Throughout the pandemic, SAA has implemented a variety of health and safety measures designed to keep those who needed to travel and work at the airport safe and comfortable. This includes limiting the terminal building to travellers and workers only, physical distancing, reminders to frequently wash or sanitize your hands, installation of dozens of hand sanitizing stations, an enhanced cleaning program, and always wearing a mask.

What We’re Doing About COVID-19 at JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport?

The Sydney Airport Authority has updated and implemented our Airport Emergency Plan to reflect what we know about COVID-19 and how we can help manage the impact of this virus in our facility and community if needed. Other steps we’re taking include the following:

  • We’re asking all passengers and employees to practice social distancing and to maintain a distance 2 meters (6 feet) from others and avoid non-essential gatherings.
  • Terminal access is restricted to ticketed airline passengers only who are travelling that day - if you are dropping off departing passengers, or picking up arriving passengers stay in your vehicle, DO NOT ENTER the terminal.
  • We’re posting and sharing public health information with a focus on social distancing, wearing face masks, frequent hand washing, and other steps employees and passengers can take to reduce the spread of germs.
  • Our cleaners have enhanced surface cleaning and disinfecting in high traffic areas. Electrostatic disinfecting is carried out after every flight.
  • Floor distancing stickers are placed to allow proper distancing in queues and glass shields are in place at counters.
  • We have tripled the number of hand sanitizer stations in the terminal.
  • We continue to stay in close contact with public health officials federally and provincially to ensure we have the latest Covid-19 updates.
  • Additional precautions are being taken for employees involved in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the airport terminal building and airfield, including social distancing, workplace cleaning and disinfecting.
