New safety Rules for Recreational UAV Operators - March 16, 2017

Canada’s Airports Applaud Government of Canada’s New Safety Rules for Recreational UAV Operators
Under these new rules, recreational drone operators must mark their drone with their contact information, and may not fly higher than 90 metres; within 75 metres of buildings, vehicles or people; or within 9 kilometres of the centre of any airport, heliport, aerodrome or water aerodrome where aircraft take off and land. Any recreational operator who fails to comply with the new flying restrictions and conditions could be subject to fines of up to $3,000.

"Transport Canada takes very seriously the increased risk to aviation safety and to people on the ground. I'm concerned that the number of reported drone incidents has almost tripled from 41 when data collection began in 2014, to 148 last year. That is why we are proceeding with this Order which takes effect immediately—to enhance the safety of aviation and the public while we work to bring into force permanent regulations," says The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport.

CHECK-IN 90 MINUTES PRIOR TO BOARDING

Passengers are reminded to check-in at least 90 minutes before their departure to avoid the risk of being denied boarding.

The airlines are strictly enforcing their check-in cut off time of 45 minutes prior to departure. The terminal is busy with three early morning departures and passengers have to get through security.  The airlines finalize their weight and balance calculations 45 minutes prior to departure and that process takes up to 40 minutes.  Please check-in 90 minutes prior to your departure to avoid the risk of being denied boarding.
